I meet my Crew, "Jack" and "Jill" (not their real names), in the jetbridge. After a quick bite, I put on my uniform.I never commute in uniform because it's easier to stay looking crisp if I wait until it's time to actually work to suit up.ġ2:30PM, and I'm off to the gate. Since I don't have to be at the gate until 12:40PM, I've got time for a nap and lunch. My trip sheet also lists the name and phone numbers of the hotels where I'll be staying.
We arrive in BWI right on time at 9AM and head for the Crew lounge, where I check in for duty by computer and print out a copy of my trip so I know where I'm going and when for the next three days. MONDAY It's 6:15AM and my alarm clock just went off.after a quick shower, I'm out the door headed for the airport by 6:45. Now that I'm listed for the flight, I make the last preparations for tomorrow.
I log on to SWALife (our Company's internal web site) to check the loads for the flights to Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI).my report time is at 12:10PM, so I try for the 7:40AM departure. I'm a commuter so my first order of business is getting to work. It's Sunday night and tomorrow, I have a trip. It's a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday three-day trip with layovers in Los Angelas (LAX) and Salt Lake City (SLC). I figure the easiest way to do this is to describe a recent trip. This training is mandated by the Federal Aviation Administration, and you must pass the Flight Attendant Certification exam at the end of the training course.I wanted to take this opportunity to share with you what it is like to be a Southwest Airlines Flight Attendant.

You will also spend time in a flight simulator learning how to respond to a variety of emergency situations, including learning how to open doors that have been locked, apply oxygen masks and inflate emergency rafts. Medical training, including CPR and defibrillator training, are included in case medical emergencies arise on a flight. Trainees spend eight hours a day, five days a week learning how to respond to any circumstances while in flight. If you are accepted as a flight attendant, you will undergo an intensive five-week, paid training course taught by veteran flight attendants. During this process you will also be subject to a drug test and background check. If you make it to the next round, you will have an individual interview to determine if you fit in with the company. The ability to think quickly and make others laugh will benefit you during this process. Southwest Airlines focuses on personality - they want funny, outgoing people, and their screening process includes questions to gauge your sense of humor. Your first interview will typically be a group interview that allows the interviewers to see a bit of your personality and determine how you interact with others. If your application is accepted, you will take part in a screening process to determine if you are a good fit for Southwest Airlines. Alternatively, sign up to get automatic email alerts when a flight attendant position comes open, at which point you can return to your account to apply for that position specifically. The airline does not hire flight attendants very often however, you can create a profile and upload your resume to be put in a general pool for a recruiter to call you when a flight attendant position becomes open, though you may also be contacted for other positions you qualify for. Southwest Airlines lists job openings on their website, with flight attendants listed under Inflight. There is no requirement to be bilingual, but it may give you an advantage over other applicants. You must have effective communication skills to relay messages to the flight crew and make any necessary announcements you will also do a brief safety demonstration on each flight, so you must be able to speak confidently in front of a crowd. Flight attendants help customers board and disembark, address any concerns they have and serve refreshments. However, as you will assist customers, you must interact well with people.
A high school diploma is the only educational requirement for you to apply as a flight attendant for Southwest Airlines.
